I enjoyed the first Paula Savard book, and really looked forward to the second. I wasn't disappointed. This fast-paced thriller kept me turning the pages. Plenty of characters on stage to keep the action moving and bang-on scene and setting descriptions. Anyone who lives in, or has visited, Calgary, will know where they are. I liked Paula's understated romance with Sam, very age-appropriate to the characters. With twists and turns from start to finish, smart dialogue to keep the reader on point, this is a book I thoroughly recommend.Product details

As a big fan of the first Paula Savard mystery, I was really hoping we'd get to see a sequel. After this one, I'm hoping for even more (maybe a "winter" and "spring" book too!).
The 10-day timeline against the backdrop of the Stampede ensures a fast pace and well contained story - it's a real page turning, which I finished in under a week. Even though I'm not from Calgary, I did enjoy the Stampede atmosphere.
Strongly recommend this to anyone who enjoys detective stories.
I read her first book, Deadly Fall, and really loved it, as it was set in Calgary where I live. This one continues the story of Paula, and includes excellent atmosphere of the Calgary Stampede, being set during the ten days of the Stampede festival. The Stampede is all encompassing in Calgary and the story line captures this well. The characters are well described and are very realistic.
The excellent descriptions of places and events around the city add a great background to the mystery, and the resolution is satisfying, right down to the party watching the closing fireworks at the end.
Be sure to read this, and the first book as well. I am eagerly awaiting the next chapter in this series.
