Lanterra is a cursed land of unbalanced magic. There is no hope for its citizens until fourteen-year-old, unproven mage, Krys Anderwood opens an ancient journal and unleashes its power. The tome depicts a great battle two hundred years before, when an evil sorcerer named Grimm murdered the reigning king, Reth, and trapped the Wizard Raven, forcing him into eternal sleep. With the king and the mighty wizard gone, the magic of Lanterra became unbalanced, slowly succumbing to evil as it ran unchecked across the fragile land. Krys finds that he faces an impossible deadline, yet concedes to the task set two centuries before. He accepts the help of his best friend, Peter Greenleaf, and Navashay Foxglove, a healer from a distant village. Together they embark on a journey Krys is ill prepared for. Plagued by insecurity and marginal abilities, he must battle hideous lizard creatures, navigate a mysterious and deadly forest, and find Ravenwood Castle to free the trapped wizard and break the curse. All before Grimm can stop him.
Unchosen Mage Legend of Ravenwood Book 1 eBook M Norton
This is light reading but nonetheless fun. FYI - according to Author's webpage, this is the first book in the 6 book Legend of Ravenwood series.Story follows 3 young teens as they set out on a journey to free a legendary wizard from a 200 year old curse. The tale is fun but the plot progression is simplistic. The main characters primarily follow clues from a magic book which gets updated as they complete tasks. Use of updated magic book clues to advance plot gets stale fairly quickly. Characters are likeable and easy to relate to. Keeping in mind that they are young teens, the three range from cocky to insecure and from extroverted to introverted but come together well as a group. It is an entertaining light read to follow their adventure. For the price point, it was worthwhile.
Conclusion of book was sufficient for it to be a standalone novel. Although there are unresolved plot elements and teaser for next novel, this book stands on its own as the quest to free the legendary wizard Raven. I am not certain if I will get the next books in this series or not. If pricing stays reasonable then I might since it was fun though not very substantive.

Unchosen Mage Legend of Ravenwood Book 1 eBook M Norton Reviews
M. Norton's "Unchosen Mage" is a good book especially for early teens. The adventure stars three teenagers - two who are close buddies and a young lady who also becomes a close friend. They have to work together to release a wizard from centuries long magical sleep to help restore magic to their land to heal it.
It's fun lite reading.
I must say that I felt this was a really good story. I can understand some of the reviews that say that they got bored with the story because I too felt a lull in the middle of the book (hence the reason for 4 stars instead of 5). The story does start strong and end strong. One thing that does need to be understood is that this is the first book in a series, so there is a lot of character and story building. As memory serves other successful series such as Harry Potter and Twilight both had a very slow story for the first book. This is just part of setting the scene for a fantastic story! Hurry M. Norton and get me another book to read!!!
I felt as though I was reading a children's book. The story was boring until three quarters of the way through, than it seemed to pick up a little steam. Early in the book I hoped that this was not going to be a series but now I find out there will be five more books in this series. I will at least read the next book and hope that it will be better, as I said the story did get better towards the end so I hope the next book will continue to get better.
The story is ok, the characters are ok, even the cover is ok. Would love to rave about it, but the adventures of Krys, Peter and Navashay are doomed to never be finished. I did like it, but spend a pretty good amount of time waiting for the author to publish part two. Since the Unchosen Mage came out in 2011 - I am pretty certain that we will not see another in the series.
I don't want to lead anyone on by giving the book a higher rating because I DO like it. However a book that reads like the opening episode of a series - introducing characters, setting up the plot, providing an interesting setting - and not delivering past the intro... Too many readers would feel disappointed in the fact that there is nothing resolved in the book.
The writer felt like someone had given him a bucket full of glitter and happiness and the curmudgeon had to figure out how to make it work.
There's a way to do YA literature and this was a pretty bland execution of it.
It wasn't terribly written, but like I said it feels forced.
Honestly an easily skip-able book, you'll lose nothing by skipping this if you're an adult.
If you're an adult thinking of getting this for a kid I don't honestly think a YA would like this, probably because the really popular YA books out there are much better quality, and they'll probably have gotten used to that from the really big fantasy IP targeted at them.
Easy read,at a good price point. This is a young adult fantasy story that in my opinion is most suited for the teenage reader. You have three nice kids that become involved in a conflict between two wizards, Raven and Grim.Krys,Peter,Navashay come together to free Raven after he was frozen by Grim two hundred years earlier. There is some parts of the story that are out standing, the part of the frozen castle and the people with-in it was truly written with skill as was the old woman in the first part of the story line that gets Krys started on the adventure. The bad, I personally did not warm up to Peter as a go to sidekick, the bubble thing was far fetched even for fantasy.Over all I found the book to be well crafted and I did enjoy my time spent in the world Mr.Norton created. The story became much better as it went along. The ending was the highlight of the story for me.I do think the next installment will be much much better.
This is good for younger readers in the sense that no sexual content was emphasized. The close friendship and the protectiveness for one another are good examples for pre-teens and teenager. This is a refreshing story after checking the library or book stores and finding vampire stories / where wolf and other things that mostly dwell on sensuality among other things. This story brings you to realize the true human nature. Our ability to find strength to protect those we love no matter what we encounter and our ability to depend on our faith that a much grater power will act on us if we are determined enough to do what is right for the betterment of those around us.
