The history of the world from God's point of view- or at least from Bossuet's point of view (and, in his mind, close to the same thing). This was the book that was on the program of study for the education of Louis XIV's heir, the "Grand Dauphin." So, if it was good enough for a future king, it should be good enough for the rest of us- right? On the other hand, the "Dauphin," after having to read this, and the other books written by Bossuet for his instruction, swore that he would never read another book as long as he lived. And according to Saint-Simon he kept that promise, going down in French history as one of the most willfully ignorant princes that the house of Bourbon ever produced.In a word, praised in its time and dismissed in recent times, it is nevertheless an indispensable book to understand the mindset of Catholic France of the Counter-Reformation. Bossuet's style alone, which is fluid and almost poetic in its style, make the history worth reading.
